The Henry Taube Institute

Henry Taube
Nov. 30, 1915 - Nov. 16, 2005
Dr. Henry Taube is a Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry in 1983 for his work on the mechanism of electron transfer reactions of metal complexes .
In 1981 he received the Linus Pauling Award.
In 1992, he founded the Henry Taube Institute in Palo Alto, California.

Linus Carl Pauling
Feb. 28, 1901 - Aug. 19, 1994
Dr. Linus Carl Pauling is a Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry in 1954 for his work describing the nature of the chemical bond .
He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his work in the opposition to above-ground nuclear testing .
In 1973 he founded the Linus Pauling Institute in Menlo Park, California.
The Henry Taube Institute
The Henry Taube Institute was established in 1994 by Dr. Taube and his students, including Dr. Tai Hasegawa.
Its origins lie in the Linus Pauling Institute, which was moved to Oregon State University after Dr. Pauling's death, but the Henry Taube Institute was established by taking over the facilities and equipment that were left behind in Palo Alto.
After the deaths of Dr. Pauling and Dr. Taube, their spirit was carried on by their beloved student, Dr. Tai Hasegawa, and continues to this day.
Dr. Pauling and Dr. Taube
Dr. Pauling, born in 1900, and Dr. Taube, born in 1915, are about 15 years apart in age, but academically they were as close as brothers. To simplify their achievements, Dr. Pauling established the structural foundations of molecules, and Dr. Taube used that to give movement to chemical reactions, particularly of complexes.
They also had a deep relationship outside of academia. When Dr. Pauling was forced to leave California Institute of Technology after falling victim to the so-called Red Scare, it was Dr. Taube who warmly welcomed him to Stanford University. Dr. Taube later became head of the chemistry department at Stanford University, supporting Dr. Pauling both professionally and privately.
Dr. Taube also served as a scientific advisor of the Linus Pauling Institute until Dr. Pauling's death, and the relationship between the two was literally lifelong.
